Roakus-E

English-speaking electrician in Antwerp

Roakus-E carries out electrical work in Antwerp city and all of its districts, from Berchem and Wilrijk to Deurne, Merksem, Hoboken, Ekeren and Borgerhout. We work in English and Dutch, follow the Belgian AREI electrical code and explain the local rules to people who are new to the country. Based in Mol, we are in the city in about fifty minutes.

Old wiring in a city of terraced houses

Much of Antwerp was built between 1880 and 1930. The terraced houses in Zurenborg, Berchem and Borgerhout and the apartments carved out of them later often still carry parts of their original installation: cloth-insulated cables, fuse boxes with screw-in fuses and no residual current device, and a single circuit feeding half the floor. That is not dangerous by definition, but it does mean the installation will fail an inspection and cannot safely take a modern kitchen, an air conditioner or a charger.

Most of the work we do in the city is therefore renovation: replacing the fuse box, running new circuits for the kitchen and bathroom, adding sockets where people actually need them and bringing the earthing up to the AREI standard. In apartments we coordinate with the building manager, because the main supply and the meter cupboard are usually shared.

  • Fuse box replacement with 30 mA residual current devices and proper earthing
  • Partial or complete rewiring during a renovation
  • New circuits for kitchen, bathroom, air conditioning or an EV charger
  • Lighting, intercom, video door entry and network cabling
  • Fixing the points listed on a failed inspection report

The inspection, explained for newcomers

In Belgium every new or substantially renovated installation must be inspected by an accredited inspection body before it is used, and an existing installation must have a valid report when a house is sold. The inspector checks the installation against the AREI code and needs two drawings: a single-line diagram and a layout plan. We produce both, book the inspection if you want us to and are present when the inspector comes. If you bought a house with a negative report, send it to us: we turn the remarks into a priced plan and arrange the re-inspection afterwards.

If you rent, repairs to the fixed installation are normally the landlord's responsibility. We are happy to write the quote in English and in Dutch so you can pass it on.

Planning work in the city

Parking and access take planning in Antwerp. For a larger job we book consecutive days, bring the materials in one go and apply for a parking permit if the street needs it. For small repairs, a socket that stopped working or a light that trips the fuse, we usually combine several addresses in the city on one day and fix it in a single visit.

Businesses in the port, offices in the centre and practices in Berchem and Wilrijk call us for three-phase power, workshop lighting and connecting equipment, scheduled around opening hours.

How it works

  1. Site visit

We come by, look at the current installation and listen to what you want. Free and without obligation.

  2. Quote

Within a few days you receive a clear quote, split per item, so you can choose for yourself.

  3. Installation

We plan the work at a time that suits you, work tidily and leave no mess behind.

  4. Inspection and handover

We supply the diagrams, arrange the inspection and go through everything with you. Only then is the job finished.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really work in English?

Yes. Quotes, site visits, the explanation at handover and the paperwork for the inspection are all available in English. Dutch is fine too, and we can switch between the two for a landlord or building manager.

My installation failed the inspection. What now?

Send us the report. We translate the remarks into a concrete list with a fixed price, carry out the work and arrange the re-inspection. After a sale with a negative report the buyer has 18 months to put things right.

Can you work in an apartment with a shared meter cupboard?

Yes. We check what is yours and what belongs to the building, inform the building manager where needed and make sure the new circuit is properly protected at your fuse box.
